ALTAR OF IMAGINATION by Kiki van Eijk for Rademakers Gallery Design Miami/Basel 14-19 June 2022

We are thrilled to present Altar of Imagination, a new work created by Dutch designer Kiki van Eijk for Rademakers Gallery for the 16th edition of Design Miami / Basel.

The work celebrating the flexibility, resilience and adaptability of humanity will be exhibited in the Curio section with the intent of transporting visitors into a personal, visionary layered world. Experimenting and researching materials and the handmade are at the core of her twenty-two years long practice of reinventing crafts, but Kiki van Eijk’s design practice while imaginative and intuitive is always refined by a rigorous attention to the process and skilled thoughtful craftsmanship. Altar of Imagination, in the designer’s intention, is not designed for escapism, but for happiness, and the collection on show spans from mirror to ceramic, from textile to bronze, covering the versatility of her discipline.

The textile collages on display are truly experimental, made primarily of mixing wool, cotton, felt, linen, and leather. They are developed and crafted in both Kiki’s atelier, and the Lab of the Dutch Textile Museum. The designer departs from traditional textile techniques, introducing tufting for the first time with the aim of being as faithful as possible to her original ‘sketches’, a series of crayons drawings on cardboard and paper produced in that intuitive way of working so dear to Kiki van Eijk’s practice.

In Rusty Sketch these textile elements are laboriously made with an incredible eye for detail and colour, custom dyed wool and hand tufted parts developed at the Textile lab. Petrol Sketch is a contemporary piece with handmade textile relief elements. Using a big variety of material from her personal archive of more than 20 years work, she creates a unique collage where each element is meticulously stitched and colors are intentionally chosen. In Spring Green Sketch Kiki takes a new outlook on traditional techniques and in a fresh and imaginative way combines hand tufted parts, developed at the Dutch Textile Museum, and handmade textile relief techniques creating an innovative 21st century collage piece.
